The Cycas Revoluta, commonly referred to as the Sago Palm, is a cold hardy cycad that attains a good size and has become a very popular landscape item and indoor plant in the UK. Although they may look similar to palms, with their sturdy pinnate fronds and their thick usually unbranching trunks, these plants are actually not palms at all, but cycads.
Cycads are primitive plants dating as far back as 280 million years and are native to Southern Japan. Cycads go back to the Jurassic Age, and with all of their armor, it’s easy to see why they have survived so long. Unfortunately, over half of the world’s cycads are threatened with extinction in the wild, however this rapid decline is helped by the fact that many species are commonly planted household plants.
Even though the Cycas Revoluta looks as if it should be living on a tropical island somewhere, these particular plants are perfectly happy living indoors and can live for up to 200 years! Fun and striking, this cycad will always be a proper statement plant for those seeking a tropical feel.
